-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. English after this line -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. ENG From a true story. Even better: from my morning walks The road and redevelopment works always make me suffer, especially if they involve cutting of trees, the destruction of long-lived beauties or the unjustified eradication of pearls of tranquillity. But this is the world: change is the only constant. Suffering (especially in the early days) was however followed by the unexpected joy that caught me in my drowsy walks towards the office, as a real gift unfolded to enrich my mornings. He wears two white gloves, a high visibility vest (with even the company name) and a worn black hat. He directs traffic, and he's on shift from early morning to lunchtime. Those few square meters at that intersection are his office in these days, in a routine that led him to tan his face and excite mine. "What will ever be so exciting about it?" - someone would ask. Let me digress. A few months ago I heard about the painting "The milkmaid" by Vermeer. In that context it was used as an example of a moment of awareness, of one of those rare moments in which we are absorbed but present in the apparently useless (but in reality deeply incarnated) gestures of our experience. As David le Breton wrote: "walking is useless, like all essential activities. [...] It does not lead to anything except to oneself [...] ". I obviously looked for the painting, which depicts a robust woman pouring milk: nothing more. But it is the total immersion in the gesture and the silent atmosphere that embraces her that get to the eyes (and to the soul) of the observer (see above for the picture). There are obviously thousands of other possible examples, according to the various personal interpretations. I like the idea of proposing this photo, showing Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson, two guys very much used to drive fast but here caught in an instant of what seems slow and pure lightheartedness (see above for the picture). Returning to the milkmaid, I would have never thought to remember that painting looking at a man who directs traffic. Not only have I never seen anybody directing road traffic like he does, but I also rarely observed so much care and joy in performing a job, so much desire to guide and serve, carrying out the essential with the greatest grace. You surprised me, and I get emotional every morning, even when there is no traffic to direct and you walk back and forth on the sidewalk with a presence similar to the one sought in a vipassana meditation retreat. Those slow and precise gestures, enriched with white gloves, make you a mime in disguise. A conductor disguised as a worker, a spiritual guide disguised as a servant, a human being pervaded by humanity, with enormous respect for every profession I have listed and that you might get in your hands. Speaking of mimes, I now remember I met one on a flight. Talking to that professional actor made me understand not only how fundamental body language is, but also how silence can be vehicle for majestic concepts, communicating them even in a more genuine and crystalline way than words. Yesterday morning I diligently stopped at the edge of the footpath, waiting for your gesture approving my crossing. I replied with a nod, then adding a sincere "thank you". And, with a wonderful smile, you accompanied a movement of your hand towards your heart, to then take it and serve it to me as if it was on an imaginary tray. I don't know if I've ever seen more grace and humility in a single second, but certainly those two white gloves found their essence at an intersection, directing lives towards their destiny and turning the page of their stories to the next chapter.
