The time we live in is the most adequate one to train ourselves on extracting the best out of it, and the two following excerpts help the cause of this thought. --- "There were no formerly heroic times, and there was no formerly pure generation. There is no one here but us chickens, and so it has always been: A people busy and powerful, knowledgeable, ambivalent, important, fearful, and self-aware; a people who scheme, promote, deceive, and conquer; who pray for their loved ones, and long to flee misery and skip death. It is a weakening and discolouring idea, that rustic people knew God personally once upon a time-- or even knew selflessness or courage or literature-- but that it is too late for us. In fact, the absolute is available to everyone in every age. There never was a more holy age than ours, and never a less.” Annie Dillard - For the time being (1975) ---- " It is said that what is called "the spirit of an age" is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. In the same way, a single year does not have just spring or summer. A single day, too, is the same. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation.” This is the mistake of people who are attached to past generations. They have no understanding of this point. On the other hand, people who only know the disposition of the present day and dislike the ways of the past are too lax." ITA and ENG after the pictures. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Sankt-Johanns-Tor, Basel (CH) ENG Castles have always been privileged sites of observation, prestige and defense par excellence, but it is worth remembering that walls had a great role too in ensuring the right protection to the village and the fortification itself. Gates and accesses even had a more delicate role. Being weak points by definition, like voluntary holes in a waterproof membrane, these openings granted the flow of people, goods and facts witnessed in distant places, allowing the village to breath through this sort of nostrils. Human beings, after all, find themselves interacting with the surrounding environment in a very similar way, seeking that complex balance between protection and openness, between isolation and relationship, between solitude and sharing. This post represents a "medieval spin-off", a small exception to my castles collection, and it arises to celebrate all those doors that still help the stream of thoughts, words, opinions and traditions, which contaminate communities all around the globe, enriching them. The three gates still "alive" in Basel, that I chose as symbols here, are very well preserved. Oddly, gates and doors are the ones that often remain, unlike those walls that do not last and surrender to centuries. If only people could do the same! If only I could do it too! - For the previous "episodes", see below. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
ITA then ENG, after the pictures. ENG In the intimate and personal story of each one of us, there are places that identify a very precise moment or phase in our life, like a proper milestone would do. The castle I visited in August made me think about all this, as it ended up being a strong reference point back in 2015, when I was about to face one of the biggest changes on my path. It's such a pleasure to visit it again and again, as it also represents a perfect opportunity to see how and how much I evolved since the day I met it for the very first time. --- ENG Valtellina is strewn with castles, as I already discovered few months ago. Cerca la bellezza, trova la tua riva Prova a salvarli tutti, ma non sanguinare più Hai tali oceani dentro di te Alla fine, ti amerò per sempre" - (The poet and the pendulum - Nightwish) -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- ENG The castle that crossed my path in May came without any attempt to find it, thanks to a handful of friends that chose a thunderous but sinuous place to hug once more. How many litres of water did this castle see? How many renewed friendships? How many fish trying to climb back up? And how many plants finding refuge on a non-eternal rock? Any amount given as an answer to these questions, would not last for the time needed to pronounce it. What I am writing, is already old. After all, this is life. "Sparkle my scenery With turquoise waterfall With beauty underneath The Ever Free [...] Search for beauty, find your shore Try to save them all, bleed no more You have such oceans within In the end I will always love you" - (The poet and the pendulum - Nightwish) L'occhio attento di alcuni di voi avrà notato che ad aprile nulla è stato pubblicato per la serie "un castello al mese". - Nelle foto: Castello di Santa Barbara - Alicante (Spagna) - Marzo 2018 - Per i precedenti episodi, vedi sotto :) ENG - March castle came effortlessly to me, surely representing both a symbol and a summary of my most recent path.
