Being a passionate fan of castles and details, I always get enthusiastic when I find these two subjects merged in an architectural clinch, evidence of sweat through centuries. Ah! We are like castles equipped with legs, eyes and arms! And here it is, the fourth castle of this unexpected 2017 collection, following the first three that I mentioned here. In the picture: Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg and details. Alsace, April 2017.

Essa è, piuttosto, imparare a vedere coi stessi come esattamente siete. Vedere cosa c'è dentro voi stessi e accettarlo pienamente. Solo allora lo potrete cambiare" H. Gunaratana - La pratica della consapevolezza in parole semplici ENG
I often wondered about meditation (that I prefer to call "contemplation", a more suitable word which is also less susceptible to misunderstanding) and about the possibility to describe it for a form of escapism, i.e. evasion from reality. Is meditation a form of escapism? I now think that It is exactly the opposite, regardless the type and object of the meditation. If this is not true, then what you're practicing is not meditation but a sort of drifting from the context, in a real attempt to detach from what is around you. Despite the focus on a specific type of meditation, the excerpt explains very well all this. "Misconception #7 - Meditation is running away from reality Incorrect. Meditation is running into reality. It does not insulate you from the pain of life. It allows you to delve so deeply into life and all its aspects that you pierce the pain barrier and you go beyond suffering. Vipassana is a practice done with the specific intention of facing reality, to fully experience life just as it is and to cope with exactly what you find. It allows you to blow aside the illusions and to free yourself from all those polite little lies you tell yourself all the time. What is there is there. You are who you are, and lying to yourself about your own weaknesses and motivations only binds you tighter to the wheel of illusion. Vipassana meditation is not an attempt to forget yourself or to cover up your troubles. It is learning to look at yourself exactly as you are. See what is there, accept it fully. Only then can you change it." Ale: "In realtà no, a parte i venerdì di magro o simili. Islam vuol dire resa. Ci inchiniamo solo a lui, e a nessun altro uomo. ENG
Ale:"Why don't you eat pork?" They: "So it is written. Do you have anything similar in Catholicism?" Ale: "Well, actually no, apart from fasting in specific days or similar. I personally don't follow Christianity. I find myself more at ease with Buddhism". They: "Ah, you look for the inner peace then." Ale: "Well, It's not all about this. It is a lot more... You pray a lot as Muslims, don't you? They: "Yes, 5 times a day. We pronounce some verses from Quran. We thank Allah, standing and bowing. We bow only to him, and to no one else. Islam means surrender. We bow and thank him for everything and we pray for peace". Nice, they are looking for inner peace as well. Surrender is also a key practice in yoga and Buddhism. Even Christians kneel as a sign of surrender. Ale: "What is Ramadan for you?" They: It is a test. Everybody is able to fast when it's dark. Allah wants to see if you can control your instincts. Can you control yourself when others look at you, in broad daylight? If you are sick, or travelling or simply you can't do it now, you can postpone it" Cool, I think. Even in the Vipassana meditation the control of our own instincts is a key point. They: "For our holy book, we must demonstrate love to our God, the creator, as only love brings to ultimate peace". Astonished. Buddhism and Christianity tell more or less the same. The "object" is different, but spreading love is the common path. They: "In Quran, prophet Jesus and his mother Mary are both mentioned, our women wear the veil following the example of Mary. We have full respect for Jesus and Mary". All this is just marvellous. Ale: "You know? I have a friend that converted to Islam. He choose the name Youness". They: "Nice! That's the name of the prophet that was swallowed by a whale, and survived by praying. We think that the ones who converted to Islam are more conscious than us, as they met also the alternative, while we did not." We finish our lunch. They: "When we read our holy text, we can feel that the words were written directly for us. They are full of love". The various Buddhas and Jesus were no exception, with their teachings. They: "Thanks for letting us share our beliefs." Ale: "My pleasure and honour". Earth is more or less spherical, borders are just a nonsense, unaware of the geometry. We are all sailing on the same boat, in the huge ocean of our Universe.
(a small symbolic story that describes a 20-seconds (or even less) scene, inspired by real facts and effects of an acrobatic mind) "Maybe I should get off the tram, and walk for the last few meters". That's how I saw the man that was dancing with an orange juicer in his hand. He was slowly going around, drawing weary circumferences extending his arms. I slowed down, I was both astonished and worried, especially for how drunk that man was. He showed me the orange juicer, and he said: "Look...how sticky this object is, If only I cleaned it right after the use...It would be shining now. Look at all the efforts that are required now. It shouldn't be like this, mainly because I do exactly the same with matters that are definitely more important than this orange juicer". In that moment a music started to get closer, I turned around. A man was cycling, secure, with closed eyes and with no hand on the handlebars. He was playing a violin. Considering how close he was to the tram rails, his "Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35" (the Tchaikovsky one!) was close to become a requiem in just few seconds. When I turned towards the dancer, he was no longer there. When I tried to hear again the violin notes, I realized the man on the bicycle disappeared as well. Only the tram rails were still there, an axis for my path, decorated by all the surroundings that only a careful observer would have seen. Tulips like Turner's paintings wrapped within themselves as the evening approached, dandelions feeding bees first and then my eyes with their meticulous geometries. Objects with an immense spiritual meaning dropped from someone's pockets, and bicycles parked where they could enjoy the refracted red of the sunset. Insights and revelations always come like this, like a slap with a caress inside, like a melancholy waterfall that protects, during the fall, the grand finale euphoria. Kerry Livgren would say "I drown in tears of awe", and I do likewise. "Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." - Charles Darwin - On the Origin of Species (first edition, printed on 24 November 1859) Species do evolve, while the marvel we perceive remains untouched through millennia.
