My one great achievement during those years was that I resisted the temptation to talk to anyone.
"The earthly manifestations of "God's world" began with the realm of plants, as a kind of direct communication from it. It was as thought one were over the shoulder of the Creator, who, thinking Himself unobserved, was making toys and decorations. Man and the proper animals, on the other hand, were bits of God that had become independent. That was why they could move about on their own and choose their own abodes. Plants were bound for good and ill to their places. They expressed not only the beauty but the thoughts of God's world, with no intent of their own and without deviation. Trees in particular were mysterious and seemed to me direct embodiments of the incomprehensible meaning of life. For that reason the woods were the place I felt closest to the deepest meaning and to its awe-inspiring workings. This impression was reinforced when I became acquainted with Gothic cathedrals. But there the infinity of the cosmos, the chaos of meaning and meaninglessness, of impersonal purpose and mechanical law, were wrapped in stone. This contained and at the same time was the bottomless mystery of being, the embodiment of spirit. What I dimly felt to be my kinship with stone was the divine nature in both, in the dead and the living matter." - C.G.Jung - Memories, Dreams, Reflections (in the pictures: my personal photographic interpretation of the above excerpt) ITA then ENG, before the pictures
Foto scattate alla Vedretta di Fellaria Orientale, Valmalenco IT, Luglio 2017 -------- ENG The day of my first Alpine Ibex is also the day I first experienced what a melting glacier means. Millennia-old ice fell in front of my eyes and that loud noise filled the valley and my thoughts. I was astonished, witnessing a majestic and, at the same time, cruel scene. Finding refuge in "letting go", as Ajahn Chah taught, is tremendously difficult here. I can't understand whether the mountains are suffering or if they are simply following their cycles. I can't do anything here, now. I admire, feeling grateful and honored, this brave and not ashamed surrender. I observe and learn by those who are able to interpret a manifest disaster as if it was a perfect painting. Picture shot at Fellaria Glacier, Valmalenco IT, July 2017 (ITA, then ENG after the "waterfalling" pictures) - Una cascata è allo stesso tempo uno spettacolo e un dramma. Anonime pietre e ostili crepacci? Piacevoli laghetti turchese e nuovi corsi d’acqua? Nelle foto: Cascate dell'Acquafraggia, 2017 ENG
A waterfall is both a great show and a drama. The mountain gives everything, like a broken hourglass forsaking its main resource. A waterfall, as such, needs a difference in height, often significant, not to fade into oblivion like other small rivers or rivulets. Likewise, a teaching needs a difference in knowledge in order to be given by one and then received by another. And where is that amount of water coming from? Slow and thorough processes bring it up there, until the right moment comes to release it downstream. A teacher did and does the same: he/she patiently absorbs concepts and experiences, on a short or long-term period, as required, and he/she pour them as teachings in a spectacular leap of faith, a knowledge embroidery that dives in the intuition-thirsty valley. A waterfall, not that big to be honest, taught me this effective metaphor. What will I see, then, right below the magnificent leap? Anonymous rocks and hostile crevices? Lovely turquoise lakes and newborn rivers? This depends on me, enthusiastic learner. And here, my most majestic quest commences. Jung) ENG (dedicated to you, friend of mine, that opened me the door of Jung's world) It happened to me a few times to finish a book, close it and take some time to look at the cover, with respect and gratitude, for the track left in me by that parallelepiped of paper. The fact that this time all this happened after the 3 pages of the prologue, destabilized me but also injected quite an amount of euphoria. A beginning must be celebrated when someone has the privilege to identify it. ------------------------ He looked at his own Soul with a Telescope. What seemed all irregular,he saw and shewed to be beautiful Constellations; and he added to the Consciousness hidden worlds within worlds. - S.T. Coleridge, Notebooks Prologue
My life is a story of the self-realization of the unconscious. Everything in the unconscious seeks outward manifestation, and the personality too desires to evolve out of its unconscious conditions and to experience itself as a whole. I cannot employ the language of science to trace this process of growth in myself, for I cannot experience myself as a scientific problem. What we are to our inward vision, [...], can only be expressed by way of myth. Myth is more individual and expresses life more precisely than does science. Science works with concepts of averages which are far too general to do justice to the subjective variety of an individual life. Thus it is that I have now undertaken, in my eighty-third year, to tell my personal myth. I can only make direct statements, only "tell stories." Whether or not the stories are "true" is not the problem. The only question is whether what I tell is my fable, my truth. An autobiography is so difficult to write because we possess no standards, no objective foundation, from which to judge ourselves. There are really no proper bases for comparison. I know that in many things I am not like others, but I do not know what I really am like. Man cannot compare himself with any other creature; he is not a monkey, not a cow, not a tree. I am a man. But what is it to be that? Like every other being, l am a splinter of the infinite deity, but I cannot contrast myself with any animal, any plant or any stone. Only a mythical being has a range greater than man's. How then can a man form any definite opinions about himself? We are a psychic process which we do not control, or only partly direct. Consequently, we cannot have any final judgment about ourselves or our lives. If we had, we would know everything-but at most that is only a pretense. At bottom we never know how it has all come about. The story of a life begins somewhere, at some particular point we happen to remember; and even then it was already highly complex. We do not know how life is going to turn out. Therefore the story has no beginning, and the end can only be vaguely hinted at. The life of man is a dubious experiment. It is a tremendous phenomenon only in numerical terms. Individually, it is so fleeting, so insufficient, that it is literally a miracle that anything can exist and develop at all. [...] Life has always seemed to me like a plant that lives on its rhizome. Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The part that appears above ground lasts only a single summer. Then it withers away-an ephemeral apparition. When we think of the unending growth and decay of life and civilizations, we cannot escape the impression of absolute nullity. Yet I have never lost a sense of something that lives and endures underneath the eternal flux. What we see is the blossom, which passes. The rhizome remains. In the end the only events in my life worth telling are those when the imperishable world irrupted into this transitory one. That is why I speak chiefly of inner experiences, amongst which I include my dreams and visions. These form the prima materia of my scientific work. They were the fiery magma out of which the stone that had to be worked was crystallized. All other memories of travels, people and my surroundings have paled beside these interior happenings. Many people have participated in the story of our times and written about it; if the reader wants an account of that, let him turn to them or get somebody to tell it to him. Recollection of the outward events of my life has largely faded or disappeared. But my encounters with the "other" reality, my bouts with the unconscious, are indelibly engraved upon my memory. In that realm there has always been wealth in abundance, and everything else has lost importance by comparison. Similarly, other people are established inalienably in my memories only if their names were entered in the scrolls of my destiny from the beginning, so that encountering them was at the same time a kind of recollection. Inner experiences also set their seal on the outward events that came my way and assumed importance for me in youth or later on. I early arrived at the insight that when no answer comes from within to the problems and complexities of life, they ultimately mean very little. Outward circumstances are no substitute for inner experience. Therefore my life has been singularly poor in outward happenings. I cannot tell much about them, for it would strike me as hollow and insubstantial. I can understand myself only in the light of inner happenings. It is these that make up the singularity of my life, and with these my autobiography deals." - (Prologue - Memories, dreams, reflections - C.G.
