L'universo in nessun modo è imperfetto. [...] (1989) ENG I've never been to Japan, although I often had the chance to get fascinated by it, despite the distance. Two words, with the relevant concepts, contributed to all this: - Ikigai: a word that means "a reason to wake up in the morning", the reason of your existence. - Kintsugi: art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum Sometimes I have the feeling that I grasped my Ikigai, for how difficult it would be to put it into words. Some other times I loose it, and I taste the emptiness that this brings, while in some situations I feel I found it but I cannot touch it, almost asymptotically. The art of Kintsugi, for its part, becomes metaphor of the potentiality of growing, evolving, thanks to the fractures and lacerations, research tools to be again united with everything else. Wherever I turn my head to, and whoever I meet, these topics get to me dressed in caresses on my cheek or in arrows in my back, in any case giving a deep meaning to everything. I play in a show of which I am a privileged spectator, and all I can do is bow to existence. ---------
"I became a hermit to free myself from the dust and the dirt of the world, looking for perfection on the other shore. But I realized that it was impossible to achieve it without loving even the garbage, the dust of the world, and life's anguish. Perfection can be achieved through embracing all things. While it is easy to fight against reality and fate, it is difficult to love them. What a beautiful world when you know how to love it! The universe is by no means imperfect. [...] Mountains, rivers, plants, universe. Here and there everything is in the same enclosure. To leave, is to arrive. To arrive, is to leave. Doesn't the wind blow as it wants in all directions? As my body returns to its original condition, blood and pus from my wounds will fall as dew from the night sky. After all, I exist nowhere in the universe. But in the universe, there is nothing which is not me." - From the movie "Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?" (1989)

"Once you become fully acquainted with the whole dynamic of desire, you become sensitized to it. [...] In the midst of every pleasant experience, you watch your own craving and clinging take place. In the midst of unpleasant experiences, you watch a very powerful resistance take hold. You do not block these phenomena, you just watch them, you see them as the very stuff of human thought. You search for that thing you call 'me', but what you find is a physical body and how you have identified your sense of yourself with that bag of skin and bones. You search further and you find all manner of mental phenomena, such as emotions, thought patterns and opinions, and see how you identify the sense of yourself with each of them. You watch yourself becoming possessive, protective and defensive over these pitiful things and you see how crazy that is. You rummage furiously among these various items, constantly searching for yourself -- physical matter, bodily sensations, feelings and emotions -- it all keeps whirling round and round as you root through it, peering into every nook and cranny, endlessly hunting for 'me'. You find nothing. In all that collection of mental hardware in this endless stream of evershifting experience all you can find is innumerable impersonal processes which have been caused and conditioned by previous processes. There is no static self to be found; it is all process. You find thoughts but no thinker, you find emotions and desires, but nobody doing them. The house itself is empty. There is nobody home. [...] Under the penetrating gaze of mindfulness, the feeling of self, an 'I' or 'being' anything, loses its solidity and dissolves. There comes a point in insight meditation (=Vipassana) where the three characteristics of existence -- impermanence, unsatisfactoriness and selflessness -- come rushing home with concept-searing force. Your consciousness [...] is transformed. The entity of self evaporates. All that is left is an infinity of interrelated non-personal phenomena which are conditioned and ever changing. Man and the proper animals, on the other hand, were bits of God that had become independent. That was why they could move about on their own and choose their own abodes. Plants were bound for good and ill to their places. They expressed not only the beauty but the thoughts of God's world, with no intent of their own and without deviation. Trees in particular were mysterious and seemed to me direct embodiments of the incomprehensible meaning of life. For that reason the woods were the place I felt closest to the deepest meaning and to its awe-inspiring workings. This impression was reinforced when I became acquainted with Gothic cathedrals. But there the infinity of the cosmos, the chaos of meaning and meaninglessness, of impersonal purpose and mechanical law, were wrapped in stone. This contained and at the same time was the bottomless mystery of being, the embodiment of spirit. Jung) ENG (dedicated to you, friend of mine, that opened me the door of Jung's world) It happened to me a few times to finish a book, close it and take some time to look at the cover, with respect and gratitude, for the track left in me by that parallelepiped of paper. What seemed all irregular,he saw and shewed to be beautiful Constellations; and he added to the Consciousness hidden worlds within worlds. - S.T. Coleridge, Notebooks Prologue
My life is a story of the self-realization of the unconscious. Everything in the unconscious seeks outward manifestation, and the personality too desires to evolve out of its unconscious conditions and to experience itself as a whole. I cannot employ the language of science to trace this process of growth in myself, for I cannot experience myself as a scientific problem. What we are to our inward vision, [...], can only be expressed by way of myth. Myth is more individual and expresses life more precisely than does science. Science works with concepts of averages which are far too general to do justice to the subjective variety of an individual life. Thus it is that I have now undertaken, in my eighty-third year, to tell my personal myth. I can only make direct statements, only "tell stories." Whether or not the stories are "true" is not the problem. The only question is whether what I tell is my fable, my truth. An autobiography is so difficult to write because we possess no standards, no objective foundation, from which to judge ourselves. There are really no proper bases for comparison. I know that in many things I am not like others, but I do not know what I really am like. Man cannot compare himself with any other creature; he is not a monkey, not a cow, not a tree. I am a man. But what is it to be that? Like every other being, l am a splinter of the infinite deity, but I cannot contrast myself with any animal, any plant or any stone. Only a mythical being has a range greater than man's. How then can a man form any definite opinions about himself? We are a psychic process which we do not control, or only partly direct. Consequently, we cannot have any final judgment about ourselves or our lives. If we had, we would know everything-but at most that is only a pretense. At bottom we never know how it has all come about. The story of a life begins somewhere, at some particular point we happen to remember; and even then it was already highly complex. We do not know how life is going to turn out. Therefore the story has no beginning, and the end can only be vaguely hinted at. The life of man is a dubious experiment. It is a tremendous phenomenon only in numerical terms. Individually, it is so fleeting, so insufficient, that it is literally a miracle that anything can exist and develop at all. [...] Life has always seemed to me like a plant that lives on its rhizome. Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The part that appears above ground lasts only a single summer. Then it withers away-an ephemeral apparition. When we think of the unending growth and decay of life and civilizations, we cannot escape the impression of absolute nullity. Yet I have never lost a sense of something that lives and endures underneath the eternal flux. What we see is the blossom, which passes. The rhizome remains. In the end the only events in my life worth telling are those when the imperishable world irrupted into this transitory one. That is why I speak chiefly of inner experiences, amongst which I include my dreams and visions. These form the prima materia of my scientific work. They were the fiery magma out of which the stone that had to be worked was crystallized. All other memories of travels, people and my surroundings have paled beside these interior happenings. Many people have participated in the story of our times and written about it; if the reader wants an account of that, let him turn to them or get somebody to tell it to him. Recollection of the outward events of my life has largely faded or disappeared. But my encounters with the "other" reality, my bouts with the unconscious, are indelibly engraved upon my memory. In that realm there has always been wealth in abundance, and everything else has lost importance by comparison. Similarly, other people are established inalienably in my memories only if their names were entered in the scrolls of my destiny from the beginning, so that encountering them was at the same time a kind of recollection. Inner experiences also set their seal on the outward events that came my way and assumed importance for me in youth or later on. I early arrived at the insight that when no answer comes from within to the problems and complexities of life, they ultimately mean very little. Outward circumstances are no substitute for inner experience. Therefore my life has been singularly poor in outward happenings. I cannot tell much about them, for it would strike me as hollow and insubstantial. I can understand myself only in the light of inner happenings. It is these that make up the singularity of my life, and with these my autobiography deals." - (Prologue - Memories, dreams, reflections - C.G. - W. Blake - Canti dell'esperienza (1794) |
