" The happiness that comes from worldly enjoyments such as eating, drinking, sex and relaxing is not pure or real happiness. It is changing suffering, or just a reduction of our previous suffering. [...] In Four Hundred Verses the great scholar Aryadeva says: "The experience of suffering will never be changed by the same cause, But we can see the experience of happiness will be changed by the same cause." This means that, for example, the suffering caused by fire will never be changed into happiness by that fire, but we can see that the happiness caused, for example, by eating will change into suffering just through eating. How can we understand this? When we eat our favourite food, it tastes wonderful, but if we were to continue plateful after plateful our happiness would soon change into discomfort, disgust and eventually pain. This proves that the experience of happiness will be changed into suffering by the same cause. From eating comes happiness, but also the suffering of sickness. This shows that worldly enjoyments such as eating are not real causes of happiness, and this implies that the pleasure that comes from worldly enjoyments is not real happiness. The reverse, however, does not happen with painful experiences. For instance, hitting our finger with a hammer again and again can never become pleasurable, because it is a true cause of suffering. Just as a true cause of suffering can never give rise to happiness, so a true cause of happiness can never give rise to pain. Since the pleasurable feelings resulting from worldly enjoyments do turn into pain, it follows that they cannot be real happiness. [...] Indulging in (those) pleasures is like drinking salt water; rather than satiating our thirst, the more we drink the more thirsty we become. [...] we never reach a point when we can say, ‘Now I am completely satisfied; I need nothing more.’ Not only is worldly pleasure not true happiness, but it also does not last. People devote their lives to acquiring possessions and social standing, and building up a home, a family and a circle of friends; but when they die they lose everything. All they have worked for suddenly disappears, and they enter their next life alone and empty-handed. [...] We may feel that those who have good relationships and have fulfilled their ambitions in life are truly happy, but in reality their happiness is as fragile as a water bubble. Impermanence spares nothing and no one; in samsara all our dreams are broken in the end. As Buddha says in the Vinaya Sutras: "The end of collection is dispersion. The end of rising is falling. The end of meeting is parting. The end of birth is death" [...] Buddha compared living in samsara to sitting on top of a pin – no matter how much we try to adjust our position it is always painful, and no matter how hard we try to adjust and improve our samsaric situation it will always irritate us and give rise to pain. Pure happiness comes from wisdom, which in turn comes from practising pure spiritual teachings, known as ‘Dharma’ " - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

ENG I like to explore how people cope with the topic "religion", and above all what role this has in their life. I strongly believe that every religion is fascinating and dressed with the best purposes, but our interpretation can make the difference. What verb would you choose to describe your attitude towards your religion (if any)? Explore? Trust? Believe? Ask forgiveness? There's a song that well describes the risk behind the stories that we were told and we still hear, especially when they get far from truth, claiming to be authentic. It might seem an anti-religion song (anti-christian above all), even though the purpose is quite the opposite. Lyrics and music (a bit heavy for some ears) aim for an "awakening", not to blindly believe in the stories orbiting around religion, when these are used to control or persuade people... or (even worse) to justify a war. Eventually, we are here to live the miracle. -- WEAK FANTASY (© Nightwish, www.nightwish.com) These stories given to us all Are filled with sacrifice and robes of lust Dissonant choirs and downcast eyes Self-hood of a condescending ape Behold the crown of a heavenly spy Forged in blood of those who defy Kiss the ring, praise and sing He loves you dwelling in fear and sin Fear is a choice you embrace Your only truth Tribal poetry Witchcraft filling your void Lust for fantasy Male necrocracy Every child worthy of a better tale Pick your author from à la carte fantasy Filled with suffering and slavery You live only for the days to come Shoveling trash of the upper caste Smiling mouth in a rotting head Sucking dry the teat of the scared A storytelling breed we are A starving crew with show-off toys Fear is a choice you embrace (ch.)
Using few words very similar to the ones used by Shantideva in the very beginning of his "Bodhisattva's way of life", this website does not say anything that hasn't been explained already. However, it's a way for me to write things, to better learn and practice them and who knows, maybe they'll be useful for someone. "Buddha compared our Buddha nature to a gold nugget in dirt, for no matter how disgusting a person’s delusions may be, the real nature of their mind remains undefiled, like pure gold. In the heart of even the cruelest and most degenerate person exists the potential for limitless love, compassion and wisdom. Unlike the seeds of our delusions, which can be destroyed, this potential is utterly indestructible, and is the pure, essential nature of every living being. Whenever we meet other people, rather than focusing on their delusions we should focus on the gold of their Buddha nature. This will not only enable us to regard them as special and unique, but also help to bring out their good qualities. The "one castle a month" collection goes on, again unexpectedly, after the previous episodes (that you find here and here). From Arlesheim and its Ermitage I got more than just a castle (The castle of Birseck), revealing to me a place full of ancient vibrations, mystic sensations and stunning quotes (not two forget two bird nests in the tower!). I let the pictures do the talking. - (Pictures shot in Arlesheim and Bisreck castle, May 2017). Non so. Chi sei? Che fai? Più nulla. Dorme? Non so. Essa è, piuttosto, imparare a vedere coi stessi come esattamente siete. Vedere cosa c'è dentro voi stessi e accettarlo pienamente. Solo allora lo potrete cambiare" H. Gunaratana - La pratica della consapevolezza in parole semplici ENG
I often wondered about meditation (that I prefer to call "contemplation", a more suitable word which is also less susceptible to misunderstanding) and about the possibility to describe it for a form of escapism, i.e. evasion from reality. Is meditation a form of escapism? I now think that It is exactly the opposite, regardless the type and object of the meditation. If this is not true, then what you're practicing is not meditation but a sort of drifting from the context, in a real attempt to detach from what is around you. Despite the focus on a specific type of meditation, the excerpt explains very well all this. "Misconception #7 - Meditation is running away from reality Incorrect. Meditation is running into reality. It does not insulate you from the pain of life. It allows you to delve so deeply into life and all its aspects that you pierce the pain barrier and you go beyond suffering. Vipassana is a practice done with the specific intention of facing reality, to fully experience life just as it is and to cope with exactly what you find. It allows you to blow aside the illusions and to free yourself from all those polite little lies you tell yourself all the time. What is there is there. You are who you are, and lying to yourself about your own weaknesses and motivations only binds you tighter to the wheel of illusion. Vipassana meditation is not an attempt to forget yourself or to cover up your troubles. It is learning to look at yourself exactly as you are. See what is there, accept it fully. Only then can you change it."
