ITA then ENG after the picture - Ode all'alta montagna Superato il limite dei boschi, eccoti! - A. Mansi ENG
Ode above 2000m Beyond the edge of the woods there you are! Beyond the threshold of my thoughs you hug me again... Narrow trails lead me to forks mirrors of my uncertainties sometimes they suddenly vanish, sons of questions still with no answers. What will you wear today? Scorching sun? The most unexpected snow? I've sweated a lot to see you again. My boots rely on late Würm moraine improvised steps towards your precipitous face grandiose rocky cheeks kissed by sunsets and dawns How cold is it in the night, at the alpine pastures? How far does the cows' bells sound get? How red is Antares, in the moonless nights? The small turqouise lakes find a comfortable pallet among your harsh rocks a stage for majestically horned acrobats and for Wheatears, enthusiastic in their home How do you feel up here, alone? How much do you miss your lost icy long-sleeves? What do you do with this free wind, when nobody's up here to rejoice in it? You firmly divide, apparently close slopes although you make the small passes become a tender glimmer; It would be a shame not to celebrate with name and height the noble and longed-for chat between two friendly valleys How do you make my silence so full? How can my eyes contain all that I'm admiring? How long have you been here for? Contemplating, with you around, has a delicious taste of nothing else My mind opens It gathers and abandons brooks of emotions, finding refuge in letting go. I'll go back down, now, grateful to my legs that brought you once again in that inner part where you become boundless. A last glimpse at you, mother, my cradle at 2000 meters and more Below the edge of the woods, your thirst-quenching tears reminds me of you getting mixed with mine, gurgling full of joy. Below the threshold of my thoughts, the fragrant everyday life, of a dressed-up valley. - A. Mansi

"I left that hiker astonished, he could not believe to his eyes, and that was the first time he faced that feeling. He says I'm spectacular, incredible. Maybe even more astonishing than Saoseo Lake (picture 4) or the third Sassersa lake (picture 5). But this turquoise is not mine and it is not me, I need daylight, the sky and the Sun to show all this. I am not even the water that fills me, always different as the time passes by. It seems I am full of myself, but at night, or when it is cloudy, I become anonymous and less interesting once again for the majority of you. What am I, then, as I am not even the dip that hosts me? I am nothing, impermanent emptiness that welcomes and accepts everything I am surrounded by. Allowing everything to flow through myself, with no exceptions, you will often see me painted with that turquoise that you wouldn't think possible. And the pictures you'll take will try to capture exactly that colour. Nevertheless, here is my personal recommendation: don't overlook all the rest, which is a result of the same efforts and intentions. Don't give me credit, then, just give your word that you will try to rejoice both in your greyscale and in your turquoise shadings". "My entire youth can be understood in terms of this secret. It induced in me an almost endurable loneliness. My one great achievement during those years was that I resisted the temptation to talk to anyone. Thus the pattern of my relationship to the world was already prefigured: today as then I am a solitary, because I know things and must hint at things which other people do not know, and usually do not even want to know." Foto scattate alla Vedretta di Fellaria Orientale, Valmalenco IT, Luglio 2017 -------- ENG The day of my first Alpine Ibex is also the day I first experienced what a melting glacier means. Millennia-old ice fell in front of my eyes and that loud noise filled the valley and my thoughts. I was astonished, witnessing a majestic and, at the same time, cruel scene. Finding refuge in "letting go", as Ajahn Chah taught, is tremendously difficult here. I can't understand whether the mountains are suffering or if they are simply following their cycles. I can't do anything here, now. I admire, feeling grateful and honored, this brave and not ashamed surrender. I observe and learn by those who are able to interpret a manifest disaster as if it was a perfect painting. ENG
A few pictures, shot in June 2017, that highlight some of the features that all alpine lakes share: - the stunning color, strictly linked to the water composition and to the surrounding environment - the tickle to our desire to draw and paint - the refreshing welcome to life in all its endless forms - the obstinate call to loneliness There is a further aspect that emphasizes each of the above listed items and that makes a lake even more special: the (physical and mental) effort to be borne to reach it. Without alpine lakes, this life of mine would be certainly different. ITA then ENG

Reading a book by Achaan Chah, I read this quote from the Theravada Buddhist tradition.
Literally: "All conditions are impermanent", nothing lasts forever. Everything on Earth follows this principle, even emotions! Wanting happiness so badly and asking sadness to leave, is as frustrating as begging in front of the snow, hoping that it will not melt, and that Sun will not rise above the horizon in the next day. |
