- P.s. Ci si vede a Dicembre! -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- ENG
"If you want to learn something new, either you always do different things, or you do exactly the same and you observe how you change". This teaching, given to me as "motivation" to the repetitive nature of the Ashtanga Yoga practice, is eventually applicable to any daily activity. As a game, I proposed this approach to one of my favourite alpine lakes, that ended up meeting me more often than usual, let's say roughly every two months. The pictures here below, represent the 5 times I hiked to Lach da Saoseo (Val di Campo, CH) between February and today. A dynamic and cyclic painting of something that can only be experienced, never grabbed; because of this, it represented for me a very useful tool to practice "non-attachment", trying to extinguish one of the main reasons we suffer as human beings according to Buddhism (see also dukkha). Through this 8 months, the lake has been changing, I have been changing. It's hard to say who has been observing the other or even who had the idea to start all this. - P.s. See you in December! - H. ENG What follows is an extremely powerful recap of what I have been studying and practicing since 2012, when I first approached yoga and what brought me eventually to Buddhism principles. "Once you become fully acquainted with the whole dynamic of desire, you become sensitized to it. [...] In the midst of every pleasant experience, you watch your own craving and clinging take place. In the midst of unpleasant experiences, you watch a very powerful resistance take hold. You do not block these phenomena, you just watch them, you see them as the very stuff of human thought. You search for that thing you call 'me', but what you find is a physical body and how you have identified your sense of yourself with that bag of skin and bones. You search further and you find all manner of mental phenomena, such as emotions, thought patterns and opinions, and see how you identify the sense of yourself with each of them. You watch yourself becoming possessive, protective and defensive over these pitiful things and you see how crazy that is. You rummage furiously among these various items, constantly searching for yourself -- physical matter, bodily sensations, feelings and emotions -- it all keeps whirling round and round as you root through it, peering into every nook and cranny, endlessly hunting for 'me'. You find nothing. In all that collection of mental hardware in this endless stream of evershifting experience all you can find is innumerable impersonal processes which have been caused and conditioned by previous processes. There is no static self to be found; it is all process. You find thoughts but no thinker, you find emotions and desires, but nobody doing them. The house itself is empty. There is nobody home. [...] Under the penetrating gaze of mindfulness, the feeling of self, an 'I' or 'being' anything, loses its solidity and dissolves. There comes a point in insight meditation (=Vipassana) where the three characteristics of existence -- impermanence, unsatisfactoriness and selflessness -- come rushing home with concept-searing force. Your consciousness [...] is transformed. The entity of self evaporates. All that is left is an infinity of interrelated non-personal phenomena which are conditioned and ever changing. Craving is extinguished and a great burden is lifted. There remains only an effortless flow, without a trace of resistance or tension. There remains only peace, and blessed Nibbana, the uncreated, is realized. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- ENG
I'm always amazed by trees and their great skills in just "staying", an apparent doom that hides, instead, a hard-earned concentration on their own path and intent. There is something else that enthralls me: the way they extend, towards the sky, the same arms that they symmetrically push deep in the ground, transforming a grasping effort in a hug to immensity. All this has been even more accurate for one of the most wonderful tree I've ever seen; It lies there, aside, in a timid wood not far away from the Okehampton Castle (UK), gifting those who keep the trail alive with boundless awe. Maybe even more astonishing than Saoseo Lake (picture 4) or the third Sassersa lake (picture 5). But this turquoise is not mine and it is not me, I need daylight, the sky and the Sun to show all this. I am not even the water that fills me, always different as the time passes by. It seems I am full of myself, but at night, or when it is cloudy, I become anonymous and less interesting once again for the majority of you. What am I, then, as I am not even the dip that hosts me? I am nothing, impermanent emptiness that welcomes and accepts everything I am surrounded by. Allowing everything to flow through myself, with no exceptions, you will often see me painted with that turquoise that you wouldn't think possible. And the pictures you'll take will try to capture exactly that colour. Nevertheless, here is my personal recommendation: don't overlook all the rest, which is a result of the same efforts and intentions. My one great achievement during those years was that I resisted the temptation to talk to anyone. C.G.Jung - Memories, dreams, reflections.
"The earthly manifestations of "God's world" began with the realm of plants, as a kind of direct communication from it. It was as thought one were over the shoulder of the Creator, who, thinking Himself unobserved, was making toys and decorations. Man and the proper animals, on the other hand, were bits of God that had become independent. That was why they could move about on their own and choose their own abodes. Plants were bound for good and ill to their places. They expressed not only the beauty but the thoughts of God's world, with no intent of their own and without deviation. Trees in particular were mysterious and seemed to me direct embodiments of the incomprehensible meaning of life. For that reason the woods were the place I felt closest to the deepest meaning and to its awe-inspiring workings. This impression was reinforced when I became acquainted with Gothic cathedrals. But there the infinity of the cosmos, the chaos of meaning and meaninglessness, of impersonal purpose and mechanical law, were wrapped in stone. This contained and at the same time was the bottomless mystery of being, the embodiment of spirit. What I dimly felt to be my kinship with stone was the divine nature in both, in the dead and the living matter." - C.G.Jung - Memories, Dreams, Reflections (in the pictures: my personal photographic interpretation of the above excerpt) ITA then ENG, before the pictures
Foto scattate alla Vedretta di Fellaria Orientale, Valmalenco IT, Luglio 2017 -------- ENG The day of my first Alpine Ibex is also the day I first experienced what a melting glacier means. Millennia-old ice fell in front of my eyes and that loud noise filled the valley and my thoughts. I was astonished, witnessing a majestic and, at the same time, cruel scene. Finding refuge in "letting go", as Ajahn Chah taught, is tremendously difficult here. I can't understand whether the mountains are suffering or if they are simply following their cycles. I can't do anything here, now. I admire, feeling grateful and honored, this brave and not ashamed surrender. I observe and learn by those who are able to interpret a manifest disaster as if it was a perfect painting. Picture shot at Fellaria Glacier, Valmalenco IT, July 2017 (ITA, then ENG after the "waterfalling" pictures) - Una cascata è allo stesso tempo uno spettacolo e un dramma. Anonime pietre e ostili crepacci? Piacevoli laghetti turchese e nuovi corsi d’acqua? Nelle foto: Cascate dell'Acquafraggia, 2017 ENG
A waterfall is both a great show and a drama. The mountain gives everything, like a broken hourglass forsaking its main resource. A waterfall, as such, needs a difference in height, often significant, not to fade into oblivion like other small rivers or rivulets. Likewise, a teaching needs a difference in knowledge in order to be given by one and then received by another. And where is that amount of water coming from? Slow and thorough processes bring it up there, until the right moment comes to release it downstream. A teacher did and does the same: he/she patiently absorbs concepts and experiences, on a short or long-term period, as required, and he/she pour them as teachings in a spectacular leap of faith, a knowledge embroidery that dives in the intuition-thirsty valley. A waterfall, not that big to be honest, taught me this effective metaphor. What will I see, then, right below the magnificent leap? Anonymous rocks and hostile crevices? Lovely turquoise lakes and newborn rivers? This depends on me, enthusiastic learner. And here, my most majestic quest commences. In the pictures: Cascate dell'Acquafraggia, 2017 |
